I’ve been putting this off for way too long and recent stuttering, smoke, and excess oil loss is having me replace my turbo. It should have been done long ago but for some reason I continued to think it was fine. There is a local guy that rebuilds them and so I’m picking up a new TD04 for a great deal and then adding a stainless steel oil line for good measure. I didn’t go with a bigger turbo because I don’t feel like paying for a new tune. Should hopefully be the last fix I have to do for quite a while so I can just get out and drive the damn thing without worrying so much

Who rebuilds these locally?

Guy named Richard Williams. Everyone on the local Subaru for sale group has great things to say about him and his turbos

Neat.  Me and 2 of my brothers had EJ25 turbo’s at one time, I sold mine and both of theirs had engines die due to turbo oiling issues.  Probably a good thing to get this done.

It’s dangerously past due. I think the 25's had more oil issues than the 205's but then again all Subaru’s have a tendency for disappearing oil

Oh good so my turbo must be fine if I have no issues at all and use a normal subaru amount of oil.

yes? the turbine wheels feel alright on the old one but could have been worse when it was up to temps. My wastegate arm did seem fairly loose so maybe that’s where the fluctuation and overboosting was coming from .
